Keeping shackles and pins together

Be the first to comment

What is the issue?
Working with shackles in boisterous conditions can result in a momentary fumble that sends the pin overboard.

Why address this?
Stainless steel shackles are expensive and in racing conditions the loss of a shackle could delay a sail change costing a race result.

How to address this?
Add a pin lanyard with whipping line that keeps the pin and shackle body attached as presented in figure 1.
Two fisherman’s bends are ideal to secure the lanyard. The light line twists a little as the threaded pin is screwed in. If you wish you can add a small fishing swivel to prevent this but it is not necessary.
