What is the issue?Seized fastenings are a common encounter whilst carrying out maintenance, overhaul or repair on a sea going vessel.
Why address this?Seized fastenings cause enormous problems delay and damage to equipment. Having a range of loosening techniques to deploy will quickly overcome these problems and keep work moving along.
How to address this?Extend and add leverage to a spanner by inserting a pipe over it, see figure 1.
The length of a ring spanners arm is specifically designed so that in normal use a bolt cannot be over tightened. You should not extend the spanners leverage to tighten bolts and equally you should be restrained with a spanner when using smaller diameter fittings or working softer materials such as brass. When using a leverage pipe watch closely to make certain the wrench or spanner is not slipping over the flats of the nuts. Always use in conjunction with penetration oils and freeing agents.
