What is the issue?Light air sailing can cause reverberating snapping of shackles as the wind fills and un-fills from the sails. This is particularly the case if the vessels main sail blocks were attached by shackles as was the case in our vessel.
Why address this? The repetitive cracking of the blocks as the loading up can be wearisome, particularly so for crew who are trying to rest.
How to address this?Dampen the snapping of metal shackle-upon-metal-shackles by placing a hose pipe around each shackle as presented in figure 1.
This can easily be accomplished by:
1/ Undoing the connecting shackle.
2/ Insert a hose cutting around the shackle. You may need to heat the pipe by placing it in hot water so that it fits over the end pieces.
This will have an immediate and dramatic quieting effect.
