What is the issue?Whilst going to weather or enduring severe conditions a vessel can take in a large quantity of green water through the smallest aperture. People seriously underestimate the ability for water penetration in rough conditions relying on gravity based covers to fend it off. However in very rough conditions I found the water is practically injected in.
That is the face of the wave lays over the aperture and the following body of the wave and energy presses upon this literally inject it in through the smallest crack.
Why address this?Getting any water below is far from ideal, especially so in round hulled vessels where it tends to slosh about. Water that overfills from the anchor locker also tends to have silt in it that is rich in organic material and smelly.
How to address this?Completely seal the chain hole with a tight fitting plug that fits around the chain as presented figure 1.
The plug can be used as two halves as presented in figure 1. Alternatively they can be bonded together into the chain with epoxy, making it an integrated and permanent piece. This offers the best water seal.
