What is the issue? When crossing oceans or seas to new destinations as often as not you are landing into a sailing area without any tidal data to work from. Typically boats acquire local tide data after landing.
Why address this?Tidal data can be essential for planning passages in areas with strong tidal driven currents. In certain areas you may find you are going backwards if you time pivotal final entry legs against the current. Some destination ports may in fact be tidal and require entry to be scheduled to benefit from high water.
How to address this?Use WXTide32, a free Windows (9x/NT4/2k/ME/XP) application, to predict tides for your sailing destination.
Details of where the application may be download for free is available on its home page: http://www.wxtide32.com/
WXTide32 predicts the tidal range for nine thousand five hundred designated coastal locations and will continue until 2038. Any number of user (custom) stations may also be configured.
Predictions are clear and concise and can be displayed graphically (see figure 1 for Dover) or in any of several text formats (see figure 2) including daily tide lists and monthly tide calendars.
The program is self-contained, requires less than 10 Mb of disk space from your computer hard disk. The application could not be simpler to use but does include context sensitive help plus extensive options to customize the content, display and presentation of data.
Trial the product and determine the level of working accuracy for yourself before depending upon it – there are no warranties available with this program. However general user feedback indicates that is that it is just as good as any available chargeable application. Our thanks to the developers for contributing this application without charge to the sailing community.
