Convenience at the navigation station

What is the issue?
You can never find the pencil and dividers when you need them. They also fly across the cabin when a yacht is tacking or rolling.

Why address this?
This is highly inconvenient when you want to plot a position and dividers can damage the woodwork finish falling about the cabin.

How to address this?
Make convenient holders for the navigation instruments as illustrated below for the pencil. Once an item has a secure place to live, you can reach out for it and it is right to hand whenever it is needed.

Drill an end piece of wood, then cut it off and divide it into two pieces
Drawing: Tony Gibson

The key is to utilise a piece of wood that matches the interior trim. When drilling the hole, measure it and use a ‘tape stop’ as a marker to prevent the drill bit going out through the lower piece. This enables the lower piece to provide a seat.

Although the diagram presents a pencil holder the approach can be adopted for most instruments such as dividers.
